Copycat Starbucks Iced Coffee Recipe: Bold, Black & Refreshing

There is something unmistakably satisfying about a tall glass of bold, black iced coffee — the kind that jolts you awake and cools you down at the same time. This copycat Starbucks-style iced coffee recipe keeps things pure and simple: no milk, no syrups, no frills. Just deeply brewed coffee, chilled to perfection and poured over ice for a crisp, intense flavor that true black-coffee lovers crave. Whether you are starting your morning or need an afternoon reset, this recipe delivers that signature café-style punch right from your own kitchen.

The Perfect Base for Bold Iced Coffee

Tall glass of black iced coffee with ice cubes on a dark table

A great black iced coffee starts with a strong, flavorful brew. The ice will dilute your drink as it melts, so you want a concentrate that is robust enough to hold its character from the first sip to the last. Dark roast beans, a slightly finer grind, and a slow steeping method give you a smooth, low-acid cup with deep chocolate and toasted notes — no cream needed to round it out.

1 cup coarsely ground dark roast coffee
4 cups cold filtered water
2 cups ice cubes
Optional: 1 teaspoon dark brown sugar or a splash of simple syrup (omit for fully black)
Optional: 1 cinnamon stick or a few drops of vanilla extract for aroma

Cold Brew Concentrate: The Secret to Café-Style Smoothness

Glass of Starbucks-style black iced coffee with condensation and ice

This method mimics the smooth, never-bitter profile that makes café iced coffee so drinkable. Cold brewing extracts flavor without the harsh acidity that hot brewing can bring, resulting in a concentrate you can keep in the fridge for days and dilute to your preferred strength.

Combine the coarsely ground coffee and cold filtered water in a large jar or pitcher, stirring gently to saturate all the grounds.
Cover and let steep in the refrigerator for 12 to 18 hours — longer steeping means bolder flavor.
Line a fine-mesh strainer with a coffee filter or cheesecloth and slowly pour the mixture through to remove all grounds.
Transfer the strained concentrate to a clean jar and refrigerate until fully chilled, at least 2 hours.
Fill a tall glass to the brim with ice cubes.
Pour the chilled concentrate over the ice, using roughly equal parts concentrate and cold water for a strong black cup, or adjust to taste.
Stir briskly for 10 seconds to chill the drink evenly and slightly melt the ice for a smoother finish.
If using, stir in the brown sugar or simple syrup until dissolved, and add the cinnamon stick or vanilla for a subtle aromatic lift.
Serve immediately and enjoy ice-cold.

For the boldest experience, skip the sweetener entirely and let the dark roast shine. Store leftover concentrate in the refrigerator for up to one week, and always pour it over plenty of ice to keep the flavor sharp and undiluted. This black iced coffee is proof that simplicity, done right, always wins.
