Classic Brownie That Comes Out Perfect Every Time

Freshly baked chocolate brownie squares on parchment paper

These brownies are rich, chocolatey, and incredibly easy to make with basic pantry ingredients. The recipe is designed to be printed and kept handy, so you can whip up a batch without scrolling through a long webpage. The key is to melt the butter and chocolate gently, avoid overmixing the batter, and let the brownies cool completely before cutting for clean, bakery-style squares.

1/2 cup unsalted butter
4 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts (optional)

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.
Melt the butter and chopped chocolate together in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Whisk in the sugar, then add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt, then fold gently with a spatula just until no dry streaks remain. Do not overmix.
Fold in the chocolate chips or nuts if using, then spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake for 22 to 28 minutes, until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before lifting out with the parchment and cutting into squares.
