It’s a fun pastime indulged by millions of Britons – wondering how you’d spend the money if you won the lottery.
While many of us picture buying a luxury property or jetting off to a paradise island for the holiday of a lifetime, it turns out some winners prefer to indulge in more humble spending.
Lorry driver Gary MacDonald, 60, from Barking, east
London
, scooped the top £5.2million prize on the
National Lottery
last week.
After quitting his job the morning he found out he won, he started shopping around for his first big purchase – a Shark-model vacuum cleaner.
He now plans to marry his partner of 25 years Anita, 55, and has begun searching for a house with a large garden.
Mr MacDonald said: ‘We are not flash people, we are very down to earth and know the value of things.’
He has delivered parcels to Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex for more than 30 years.
Mr MacDonald got up at 5.20am for work and saw an email which said he had won £35. He then realised there was an additional prize of more than £5.2million.
Mr MacDonald said: ‘Anita thought it was five thousand and something. But I was saying “no love, it’s more than that”.
‘It dawned on me that there was absolutely no point in doing another day’s work – not today, not any day.
‘So at 6.30am I called my boss and resigned. We have worked hard all our lives and never really had time for hobbies.
‘It will be amazing to have the time and money to now treat ourselves a little.’
