How to Make Authentic Cuban Café con Leche at Home (Moka Pot Recipe)

There's something about a steaming cup of Cuban café con leche that instantly makes the morning feel right. I still remember the first time I had one — that perfect balance of strong, dark espresso and sweet, frothy milk — and I've been chasing that flavor in my own kitchen ever since. The good news is you don't need a fancy espresso machine or a trip to Miami to make it. With a humble moka pot, a little sugar, and a few minutes of patience, you can whip up a café con leche that tastes like it came straight from a neighborhood cafetería. Let me walk you through exactly how I do it at home.

The Magic of a Well-Made Cafecito

This is where it all begins: the moka pot. Cuban coffee culture revolves around the espumita — that sweet, creamy foam you get by vigorously whisking the first few drops of hot espresso with sugar. It's the signature of a proper cafecito, and it's what gives café con leche its irresistible character. If you get this step right, everything else falls into place.

• 3 tablespoons finely ground dark-roast coffee (espresso grind)
• 1/3 cup water
• 3 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
• 1 cup whole milk
• A pinch of salt (optional, to balance the sweetness)

1. Fill the bottom chamber of your moka pot with water, staying just below the safety valve.
2. Add the coffee to the filter basket and level it gently — don't tamp it down.
3. Assemble the moka pot and place it over medium heat with the lid open.
4. As soon as the first dark coffee trickles out, spoon 1 to 2 tablespoons of it into a small cup with the sugar.
5. Whisk that coffee-sugar mixture vigorously with a spoon until it forms a thick, pale paste — this is your espumita.
6. Let the rest of the coffee finish brewing, then pour it into the cup with the espumita and stir well.
7. Meanwhile, heat the milk in a small saucepan until steaming but not boiling, then froth it with a whisk or frother.
8. Pour the steamed milk into your coffee mixture, stir, and serve immediately.

Bringing It All Together

Once your espumita is ready and the milk is hot and frothy, the final assembly is pure joy. I like to pour the milk slowly so the foam sits on top, then give it one gentle stir. The result is a cup that's bold yet comforting, sweet but never cloying. Serve it with toasted Cuban bread if you can find it, or simply enjoy it on its own while it's still hot. Trust me — once you've made café con leche this way, your regular morning coffee will never feel quite the same.

• 1 freshly brewed cafecito with espumita
• 1 cup steamed, frothy whole milk
• Optional: cinnamon or a splash of vanilla for a personal twist

1. Brew your cafecito with espumita following the steps above.
2. Heat and froth the milk until it doubles slightly in volume.
3. Pour the hot milk into the coffee, holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top.
4. Stir gently, taste, and add more sugar if you like it sweeter.
5. Serve right away in a warm cup and savor every sip.
