Fake KFC Chicken in the Airfryer: The Crispy Recipe That Breaks the Internet

Ever had that late-night craving for a bucket of that famous fried chicken, only to remember you're broke, it's raining, and putting on pants is simply out of the question? Well, grab your airfryer and prepare for a small miracle. This fake KFC-style chicken recipe is crispy, golden, wildly juicy, and it just so happens to have gone completely viral for being absolutely irresistible. No deep fryer, no drive-thru, no judgment about how many pieces you eat standing over the counter. Let's make the chicken that makes people suspiciously ask, "Wait, did you actually cook this?"

The Viral Bird That Started It All

This is the shot that made everyone stop scrolling and start preheating. Look at that crust — crunchy, craggy, and clinging to every inch of the chicken like it's holding on for dear life. If you can smell this image through the screen, you're not alone. This is the kind of chicken you make "for sharing" and then quietly eat most of it yourself. Promoção or not, this recipe pays for itself.

• 8 chicken drumsticks or thighs (bone-in, skin-on — trust the process)
• 2 cups buttermilk (or 2 cups milk + 2 tbsp lemon juice)
• 2 tbsp hot sauce (optional, but your taste buds will thank you)
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup cornstarch (the secret crunchy weapon)
• 1 tbsp paprika
• 1 tbsp garlic powder
• 1 tbsp onion powder
• 1 tsp cayenne pepper
• 1 tsp black pepper
• 1 tbsp salt (plus more for seasoning the chicken)
• 2 large eggs, beaten
• Spray oil or a light brush of vegetable oil

1. In a bowl, soak the chicken in buttermilk mixed with hot sauce and a pinch of salt. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is even better — patience builds character and flavor).
2. In a large shallow dish, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, black pepper, and salt.
3. Set up your dredging station: buttermilk chicken, beaten eggs, then the flour mixture. One by one, coat each piece in flour, dip in egg, then press hard into the flour again so every nook and cranny is covered.
4. Let the coated chicken rest on a rack for 10 minutes. This helps the crust stick instead of sliding off in shame.
5. Preheat the airfryer to 380°F (about 190°C) for 5 minutes.
6. Lightly spray the chicken all over with oil — do not skip this, dry flour does not magically become crispy.
7. Arrange the chicken in a single layer in the airfryer basket, leaving space between pieces. Cook in batches if needed.
8. Airfry at 380°F for 18–22 minutes, flipping halfway through and spraying again if it looks dry. Chicken is done when it reaches 165°F internally and the crust is deeply golden.
9. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Yes, five whole minutes. You can do it.
10. Serve with fries, coleslaw, or just stand at the counter and eat it straight from the basket like a legend.

The Photo That Sealed the Deal

Behold, the money shot. Extra crispy, ridiculously golden, and somehow still juicy inside. This is what happens when cornstarch, buttermilk, and an airfryer team up like the Avengers of comfort food. The double-coating trick is the reason this crust survives the airfryer and comes out shatteringly crunchy instead of sad and powdery. Pair it with your favorite dipping sauce, a cold drink, and absolutely no plans for the rest of the evening. Warning: this recipe has been known to cause spontaneous second batches and strong opinions about who gets the last drumstick.
